Press Release

Gemini is pleased to welcome Bart Newland as Senior Counsel at Gemini. Bart brings over four decades of experience in biopharmaceutical IP and corporate legal leadership at both large biopharmas and startups. Bart’s career encompasses substantial roles in IP portfolio creation, strategy, and management. He has significant experience in- and out-licensing IP, establishing joint ventures and collaborations, mergers and acquisitions, and in IP litigation and dispute resolution (on behalf of innovators, generics, and biosimilars). Bart has engaged in IP policy with state and federal lawmakers, served in IP leadership roles in biopharma trade associations, and has spoken at numerous international meetings and conferences.

“I am excited to join Gemini, a well-known and growing industry disruptor, as a platform to counsel startups and other biopharma companies. Gemini’s innovative pricing model allows me to provide a full range of services to companies in the U.S. and abroad at all stages of funding and growth,” said Bart.

“We are excited to add Bart to our industry-leading team of biopharma IP experts. He has had a long and storied career in the biopharma space and his practical in-house experience will allow us to better advise our U.S. and international clients on a broad range of issues,” said Robert Cerwinski, Managing Partner at Gemini.

Most recently Bart served as General Counsel of Atalanta Therapeutics, a Series-B funded biotech startup in Boston, where he was instrumental in establishing collaborations with Genentech and Biogen, as well as creating and managing an extensive company-owned and in-licensed IP portfolio. Bart previously served for over ten years as Senior Vice President and Chief IP Counsel at Biogen where he served as a permanent management member of the Board of Directors’ Science and Technology Committee and on the Board of the Biogen Foundation.

Bart’s career also includes ten years as Vice President of IP at Genzyme, where he managed all IP portfolios and litigation for a wide variety of business units, and thirteen years as a partner at Rothwell Figg in Washington DC.  At Rothwell Figg Bart represented both innovative and generic drug companies in all aspects of IP creation, portfolio management, licensing, and litigation.

Since 2021, Bart has served on the Board of Directors of Addgene, where he now serves as Vice Chair.  Addgene is a not-for-profit repository and distributor of research reagents (plasmids, viral vectors, and recombinant antibodies) to academic, non-profit, and commercial laboratories around the world.

Bart earned a Bachelor of Science degree in microbiology from the University of Massachusetts and a Juris Doctor degree from the William and Mary Law School.  Bart resides part of the year in the greater Boston area and part of the year in Paris, France.
